New Orleans, Louisiana – Extreme heat will grip southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi today, with heat index values expected to reach 108 to 110 degrees across the region by mid-afternoon. Residents in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Gulfport, and surrounding parishes face a heightened risk of heat-related illnesses through 7 p.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service, a Heat Advisory remains in effect from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. CDT, impacting Iberville, East and West Baton Rouge, St. Tammany, Jefferson, Orleans, Terrebonne, Lafourche, and much of coastal Mississippi, including Biloxi and Gulfport. Hot temperatures combined with high humidity will make outdoor conditions dangerous for anyone exposed for extended periods.

City officials in Baton Rouge and New Orleans urge residents to stay indoors during peak heat, check on elderly neighbors, and avoid strenuous activity unless absolutely necessary. Public cooling centers remain open, and local hospitals report increased calls for heat exhaustion symptoms.

Drivers should avoid leaving children or pets in vehicles, as interior temperatures can climb rapidly. Lightweight, loose clothing and regular hydration are essential. Limit outdoor work to early morning or late evening hours, and take breaks in the shade whenever possible.

With oppressive heat lingering through sunset, further advisories may follow if conditions persist. Stay tuned to local news for updates, and take precautions to stay cool and safe.
