Lake Charles, Louisiana – A tropical disturbance approaching from the Gulf is expected to bring dangerous rainfall totals to south-central Louisiana starting Thursday, with parts of Acadiana possibly seeing over a foot of rain by Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, the system has a 40% chance of tropical development but is already set to deliver significant impacts. Rainfall totals between 10 and 15 inches are possible in New Iberia, Lafayette, and surrounding parishes, while a broader swath from Cameron to Opelousas could see 4 to 8 inches.
Localized flooding is likely, especially in low-lying areas of Iberia, Vermilion, St. Martin, and Lafayette parishes. Travel may become hazardous on highways including I-10, US 90, and LA 14. Emergency management officials urge residents to prepare for possible road closures and power outages, and to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain.
The heaviest rain is expected from Thursday night into Friday, with lingering showers through early Saturday. Flash flood watches may be issued as conditions evolve, and further updates are expected later today.
