New Iberia, LA – A New Iberia resident was killed in a single-vehicle crash early Monday morning on U.S. Highway 90 Frontage Road, prompting Louisiana State Police to urge motorists to prioritize seat belt safety.

According to Louisiana State Police, the fatal incident occurred shortly after 1:00 a.m. near Captain Cade Road. Troopers report that 44-year-old Renota Lowther was traveling westbound in a 2012 Infiniti M37 when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle veered off the roadway to the right. Authorities allege that Lowther overcorrected, causing the vehicle to cross back over the roadway before exiting to the left and overturning after striking an embankment.

Lowther, who was allegedly unrestrained at the time of the crash, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. State Police said routine toxicology samples have been collected for analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.

Officials with Louisiana State Police remind the public that using seat belts significantly reduces the risk of fatal injury during a crash. Troopers encourage all motorists to avoid driving impaired, fatigued or distracted, and to ensure that every vehicle occupant is properly restrained. While not all accidents are survivable, authorities say that such precautions often mean the difference between life and death.

Anyone with additional information about the incident is urged to contact Trooper First Class Peggy Bourque at the Louisiana State Police Troop I Public Affairs Section.
