Avoyelles Parish, LA – A fatal two-vehicle collision in Avoyelles Parish late Sunday allegedly involved suspected impairment, leaving an Alexandria man dead and another under arrest.
According to Louisiana State Police, troopers responded to a crash on Louisiana Highway 1 near the Echo community at approximately 9 p.m. Sunday. Investigators reported that a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, allegedly driven by 34-year-old Romero H. Roberto of Alexandria, crossed out of the northbound lane and struck a 2013 Kubota lawn mower on the northbound shoulder. The Kubota was being operated by 59-year-old Rickey G. Maddox, also of Alexandria.
Maddox reportedly sustained severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. According to police, Roberto, who was not wearing a seatbelt, allegedly did not suffer injuries. Troopers collected toxicology samples, and impairment is allegedly suspected as a factor in the crash, according to Louisiana State Police.
Troopers arrested Roberto on several charges, including vehicular homicide, driving while allegedly intoxicated (first offense), careless operation, no driver’s license, and expired license plate. He was booked at the Avoyelles Parish Detention Center as the investigation continues.
State Police remind all motorists that driving under the influence of alcohol, prescription, or other drugs can allegedly impair driving abilities and increase the risk of deadly crashes. Drivers are urged to designate a sober driver and plan ahead.
