Lake Charles, Louisiana – Freezing rain and ice accumulation could create hazardous travel conditions across parts of southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas late Saturday into Sunday as the coldest air of the season moves into the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, a strong cold front is expected to arrive Friday night, bringing sharply colder temperatures that will remain in place through early next week. Forecast confidence is high that subfreezing air will overspread central Louisiana and interior southeast Texas, with some locations remaining below freezing for much of Sunday.

Probability maps from the NWS indicate a 60–85% chance of measurable ice accumulation along and north of the Highway 190 corridor, including areas near Alexandria, Jasper, and DeRidder. A 30–50% chance extends southward toward the I-10 corridor, while coastal areas south of I-10 have a lower, 0–40% chance of ice accumulation.

Rain is expected ahead of the cold air, and officials warn that precipitation freezing on contact with roads and bridges could lead to slick conditions, particularly overnight Saturday and early Sunday. Forecast uncertainty remains regarding exact ice amounts and how far south freezing rain may extend, but confidence is increasing that road impacts are possible.

Temperature forecasts show overnight lows falling into the 20s and lower 30s across much of the region this weekend, with daytime temperatures struggling to recover on Sunday. Young workers, students, and commuters should plan for potential travel delays and consider adjusting weekend plans.

The National Weather Service advises residents to continue monitoring forecasts, prepare for cold conditions, and avoid unnecessary travel if icy roads develop.
