Louisiana – A sudden rumble beneath quiet early-morning skies startled residents across parts of the ArkLaTex region today.

A magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck roughly 8 kilometers west-northwest of Edgefield, Louisiana, just south of Shreveport. The quake occurred at approximately 4:41 a.m. Central Time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake originated about 5 kilometers below the surface, a relatively shallow depth that can make shaking easier to feel across a wider area.

Residents across northwest Louisiana, eastern Texas, and southwestern Arkansas reported feeling the tremor. Some described brief shaking that lasted several seconds. Others noticed rattling windows, creaking walls, or shifting objects.

Earthquakes of this size are uncommon across Louisiana, making the early-morning jolt notable for the region.

The epicenter sits in Caddo Parish, within the broader ArkLaTex region where Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas meet. Communities near Shreveport, Greenwood, Stonewall, and parts of East Texas likely experienced the strongest shaking.

The USGS currently lists the earthquake with a low impact risk, indicated by a green alert level. That means significant damage is unlikely.

Still, the quake was widely felt due to the quiet overnight conditions and relatively shallow depth.

Seismologists say small aftershocks are sometimes possible following earthquakes of this size. However, most events in this magnitude range pass without additional activity.

Earthquakes in the Gulf South remain rare compared with the West Coast, but minor seismic activity does occasionally occur across the region.

Officials encourage anyone who felt shaking to submit reports through the USGS “Did You Feel It?” system, which helps scientists map how far tremors were experienced.

For now, the ArkLaTex region returns to a quiet Monday morning after a rare geological wake-up call.
