Shreveport, Louisiana – A dangerous stretch of extreme heat continues across Louisiana, Arkansas, and northeast Texas, with heat index values pushing as high as 115 through 7 p.m. Thursday. Residents across cities including Shreveport, Monroe, Texarkana, and El Dorado are being urged to take immediate precautions as the heat and humidity remain at life-threatening levels.

According to the National Weather Service in Shreveport, the Extreme Heat Warning now covers Miller, Lafayette, Caddo, Bossier, Webster, Claiborne, Lincoln, and surrounding counties, extending through north-central Louisiana and southwest Arkansas. The warning also includes Sevier, Howard, Little River, and Union counties, where heat index readings could reach 112.

The risk of heat-related illnesses—such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke—is high, especially for anyone working or spending time outdoors. Power companies in the region report increased demand as residents seek relief in air-conditioned spaces. In Monroe and Shreveport, city officials are opening cooling centers and urging residents to check on elderly neighbors.

Drivers are advised to stay off the roads during peak afternoon hours, when pavement temperatures soar above 130°F. Public health officials recommend drinking extra fluids, avoiding direct sunlight, and limiting outdoor activity to early morning or evening.

This prolonged heat is reminiscent of the 2022 summer wave that strained regional power grids and led to multiple emergency room visits. Extreme Heat Warnings remain in effect until 7 p.m. Thursday, with further advisories possible if temperatures remain elevated.
