Morgan City, Louisiana – Minor flooding is set to begin in Morgan City this weekend as the Atchafalaya River rises above flood stage, prompting a river flood warning for central and southwest Louisiana.
According to the National Weather Service Lake Charles, the Atchafalaya River at Morgan City is expected to exceed its 6-foot flood stage on Saturday, with a crest of 7 feet projected for Saturday, May 3. Industrial areas and buildings on the river side of the flood wall could see impacts, and strict traffic restrictions on river vessels will be enforced through next week.
Residents in low-lying neighborhoods, especially near Lake Palourde and Stephenville, should remain alert for possible backwater flooding. Emergency managers urge boaters to check river conditions and follow all closures. Roadways adjacent to the river, including Highway 70 and local parish routes, may experience minor disruptions if waters continue to rise.
With the river nearing the moderate flood threshold, officials recommend keeping emergency supplies on hand and monitoring local updates. Hot and muggy weather will continue across the region, with little rain relief expected until mid-next week.
Flood warnings remain in effect, and the National Weather Service advises the public to stay tuned for additional alerts as river levels fluctuate through May 3.
