Jackson, Mississippi – Severe storms are sweeping across central Mississippi and northeast Louisiana this evening, with tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds possible through midnight.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Tornado Watch is in effect until 12 a.m. CDT Tuesday. The primary threats include a few tornadoes—some potentially strong—hail up to 2.5 inches in diameter, and wind gusts reaching 70 mph.
Cities within the watch area include Jackson, Meridian, Vicksburg, and Brookhaven in Mississippi, and Monroe and Winnsboro in Louisiana. Supercell thunderstorms are moving east-southeast and may form into a damaging line later tonight, increasing the wind threat.
Residents are urged to have multiple ways to receive warnings, charge mobile devices, and move vehicles under cover if possible. Avoid travel on I-20 and U.S. Highway 61 where storms may rapidly intensify.
This watch follows several earlier warnings issued across the region. Additional tornado or severe thunderstorm warnings may follow tonight as storms evolve.
