Jackson, MS – A dense fog advisory will affect portions of northeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi early Wednesday, potentially slowing down the morning commute with very low visibility.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect from 4 AM to 9 AM Wednesday, affecting a broad area from Catahoula and Concordia parishes in Louisiana through multiple counties in east central, south central, southeast, and southwest Mississippi.

Forecasters say visibility will fall to one-quarter mile or less in the thickest fog, especially before sunrise. Communities including Natchez, Brookhaven, Laurel, Hattiesburg, Columbia, Jonesville, and Ferriday are expected to see the most significant impacts.

According to the NWS, moist air and calm overnight winds will allow fog to develop rapidly after 4 AM. Low-lying regions, wooded areas, open farmland, and river-adjacent corridors—such as stretches along the Pearl, Leaf, and Mississippi rivers—are likely to see the densest conditions.

Drivers traveling on major routes like US-84, US-98, I-59, and local highways should expect abrupt visibility drops, slower traffic, and difficulty spotting lane markers and intersections.

Conditions should begin improving shortly after 8 AM and continue to lift by 9 AM as temperatures rise. However, patches of residual fog may linger briefly in sheltered areas.

The NWS urges motorists to slow down, use headlights, and leave extra space between vehicles during the advisory period. Early commuters and school transportation services may experience delays.
