Mound, LA – A fatal early morning crash on Interstate 20 claimed the lives of two Monroe residents Wednesday, highlighting ongoing concerns about speeding and seatbelt use on Louisiana roads.

According to the Louisiana State Police, the deadly collision occurred shortly before 4 a.m. just west of Louisiana Highway 602-2. Troopers say a 2025 Toyota RAV4 was traveling east on I-20 when it was struck from behind by a 2001 BMW Z3 driven by 69-year-old Keith Robinson of Monroe. Investigators allege Robinson was traveling at a high rate of speed when he struck the Toyota, causing the BMW to veer off the roadway and collide with a tree.

Both Robinson and his front seat passenger, 39-year-old Rachelle Jefferson of Monroe, were reportedly unrestrained at the time of the crash and died at the scene. The driver and front seat passenger of the Toyota, who police say were both properly restrained, sustained moderate injuries and were transported to an area hospital.

According to the Louisiana State Police, routine toxicology samples were collected from all drivers and will be analyzed as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities emphasize that speeding can reduce reaction time and increase crash severity, while wearing a seatbelt greatly improves survival odds.

Troopers urge all motorists to follow posted speed limits and always buckle up, noting that such simple precautions can make a critical difference in crash outcomes.
