New Orleans, Louisiana – Dangerous heat will grip southeast Louisiana and parts of southern Mississippi today, with heat index values soaring to 105 degrees by early afternoon and staying elevated through 7 p.m. Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in New Orleans, the heat advisory covers a wide area, including Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Houma, Gulfport, and Pascagoula. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity is expected to increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for outdoor workers and vulnerable groups.

Cities like Hammond, Slidell, and Mandeville could see peak heat index readings between 102 and 105 degrees from midday through early evening. In Mississippi, Biloxi and Bay St. Louis are also under the advisory, with inland areas like McComb and Picayune facing similar heat risks.

Residents are urged to stay indoors during peak heat, hydrate frequently, and check on the elderly and pets. Limit strenuous activity to early morning or after sunset, and wear light, breathable clothing.

This is the first widespread heat advisory of the summer for parts of the Gulf South. More alerts could follow this weekend if the heat persists.
