Parts of south Louisiana are under a Freeze Warning as sub-freezing temperatures are expected late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in New Orleans, temperatures are forecast to fall as low as 30 degrees across Assumption, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist, Upper Lafourche, and Upper Terrebonne parishes. The Freeze Warning is in effect from midnight Tuesday night through 8 a.m. CST Wednesday.

These temperatures are cold enough to cause frost and freeze damage to sensitive vegetation and crops, particularly in areas without protective covering. The National Weather Service also warns that unprotected outdoor plumbing could be damaged if exposed to prolonged freezing conditions.

Communities included in the warning area include Houma, Thibodaux, Raceland, Laplace, Destrehan, Gramercy, Reserve, Lutcher, Pierre Part, and Bayou Cane, among others.

Residents are urged to take protective measures now, including covering or bringing plants indoors, insulating exposed pipes, and ensuring outdoor irrigation systems are winterized. Agricultural interests should take precautions to minimize potential crop losses.

While freezing temperatures are expected to be brief, officials caution that even a short-duration freeze can cause damage in south Louisiana, where cold conditions of this magnitude are less frequent.

Residents should continue to monitor local forecasts for updates as the cold weather approaches.
