Baton Rouge, La. – Tropical rains will drench much of Louisiana beginning Wednesday afternoon, with up to 15 inches possible in some areas by Saturday, prompting widespread Flood Watches from New Orleans to Lafayette.
According to the National Weather Service in New Orleans and Lake Charles, a slow-moving tropical disturbance in the northern Gulf will bring rounds of heavy, training rainfall through late Friday night in the southeast, and through Saturday evening in central and southwest Louisiana.
In southeast Louisiana, parishes including Orleans, Jefferson, Tangipahoa, and Baton Rouge are under a Flood Watch beginning at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Low-lying roads, urban areas with poor drainage, and small streams could flood quickly with repeated downpours. Flash flooding is possible through Friday night.
Meanwhile, a separate Flood Watch begins Thursday morning for central and southwest Louisiana, including Evangeline, St. Landry, Lafayette, and Iberia parishes. These areas could see the heaviest totals—up to 15 inches—by Saturday.
Drivers should avoid water-covered roads, especially in rural areas after dark. Residents should clear gutters, secure backup power sources, and keep emergency kits ready.
This tropical system is expected to linger through the weekend. Additional warnings may be issued as rainfall rates increase.
