Jefferson Parish, Louisiana – A Jefferson man was arrested Friday after a single-vehicle crash on US 90 resulted in the death of his unrestrained passenger.

According to Louisiana State Police, the incident occurred just before 1 p.m. Friday on Jefferson Highway near Labarre Road. Authorities said 37-year-old Teodoro Leiva Gomez was driving a 2011 Nissan Altima westbound when he veered off the roadway, entered the median, and struck an electrical pole.

The front seat passenger, who was not wearing a seatbelt, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the passenger’s identity, pending notification of next of kin. Gomez, who was wearing a seatbelt, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

Police say Gomez exhibited signs of impairment and was later arrested following medical treatment. He was booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center on charges including vehicular homicide, second-offense DWI, and additional traffic violations. The crash remains under investigation.

State Police emphasized the dangers of impaired and unrestrained driving, especially as the Fourth of July holiday approaches. “Too often, Troopers see the tragic results of preventable crashes,” the agency stated in a release, urging drivers to avoid alcohol and drugs behind the wheel and ensure all passengers are properly restrained.

Anyone with information about the crash is urged to contact Louisiana State Police Troop B.
