Slidell, LA – A Mississippi man was killed Saturday morning in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 59 in St. Tammany Parish, according to Louisiana State Police.

Troopers reported the crash occurred around 10 a.m. near the I-12 interchange. The vehicle, a 2001 Mercury Mountaineer pulling a trailer, left the roadway, struck a tree, and overturned, fatally injuring the driver, 64-year-old Barry D. Stockstill of Picayune, Mississippi.

According to Louisiana State Police Troop L, Stockstill was properly restrained at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the vehicle, also properly restrained, sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Authorities collected a routine toxicology sample from Stockstill as part of the ongoing investigation.

Investigators said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Troopers are reminding motorists about the importance of safe and attentive driving. “Never drive impaired, ill, fatigued, or distracted,” the agency said in a statement, also stressing the importance of seatbelt use for all occupants in every seating position.

While officials noted that not all crashes are survivable, they emphasized that simple safety precautions can significantly improve outcomes.
