Lake Charles, LA – Residents across southwest Louisiana and central Louisiana should prepare for a brief but intense cold snap as arctic air pushes into the region late Sunday, bringing freezing temperatures and dangerously cold wind chills into Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, a Cold Weather Advisory is likely for much of the region Sunday night into Monday morning as a strong cold front moves through. Forecasts show temperatures falling into the low to mid-20s, with wind chill values dropping into the upper teens and lower 20s.

Areas north of the I-10 corridor, including Lake Charles, DeRidder, Oakdale, Leesville, Alexandria, and Opelousas, could see 6 to 12 hours of sub-freezing temperatures. Communities along and just south of I-10 may experience 4 to 8 hours below freezing, while coastal areas could still briefly dip below freezing for 1 to 3 hours.

Strong north winds behind the front, with gusts over 30 mph possible, will increase the risk of hypothermia for anyone exposed to the cold for extended periods. While no wintry precipitation is expected, the combination of cold temperatures and wind will create hazardous conditions for people, pets, plants, and pipes.

Officials urge residents to bring pets indoors, cover exposed skin, protect outdoor plumbing, and allow faucets to drip overnight where needed. Those using space heaters are reminded to follow fire safety precautions.

Temperatures are expected to moderate by midweek, but residents are encouraged to make preparations now ahead of the coldest overnight period.
