Gretna, LA – Residents across southeast Louisiana are facing dangerously low temperatures as an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. Wednesday. A Cold Weather Advisory will follow, taking effect from 6 p.m. Wednesday through 10 a.m. Thursday. Wind chills as low as 7 degrees are expected.

According to the National Weather Service, frostbite and hypothermia are significant risks if exposed skin is left unprotected. Extended freezing temperatures may also cause water pipes to rupture. Emergency officials urge residents to wrap or drain exposed pipes, check on vulnerable neighbors, and ensure outdoor pets are sheltered with access to food and water.

The five-day forecast shows a gradual warming trend beginning Friday. Wednesday will remain sunny, with a high of 31 degrees but wind chill values near 10. Tonight will see increasing clouds and a low around 24. Thursday’s high is 42 degrees, with calm winds and partly sunny skies. By Friday, the high will reach 44, followed by a clear night with temperatures dropping to 32. A significant rebound is expected over the weekend, with highs in the 50s Saturday and 60s Sunday, but rain is possible Sunday evening.

Drivers are advised to use caution, particularly on icy roadways such as US-90 and Interstate 10. Experts recommend wearing layers, gloves, and hats when venturing outdoors and avoiding unnecessary travel during the coldest periods.
