Loudoun County, VA – Drivers in western Loudoun County should prepare for extended detours as Dry Mill Road (Route 699) closes for three weeks beginning 10 p.m. Friday, October 24, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.

The closure, which will last until Sunday, November 16, will allow crews to complete a major bridge rehabilitation project over the Washington & Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail in Clarkes Gap, located between Route 9/Route 7 Business (Charles Town Pike/Colonial Highway) and Woodburn Road (Route 769).

VDOT officials said the project will strengthen the historic masonry arch bridge, upgrade parapets and guardrails, and repave the roadway approaches. The 27-ton bridge dates back to the 19th century and was last rehabilitated in 2006.

While local traffic will retain access to properties along Dry Mill Road, through traffic will be detoured via Route 7 Business, Harmony Church Road (Route 704), and Woodburn Road. Trail users on the W&OD Trail will not be affected beyond brief, temporary stoppages of up to 15 minutes.

A “Pardon Our Dust” meeting for residents will be held Thursday, October 16, at 7 p.m. at Loudoun County High School, where VDOT will review the project timeline and answer public questions.
