Los Angeles County, CA –
Residents northwest of Los Angeles felt a light jolt Monday afternoon after a minor earthquake struck near Castaic, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

According to USGS data, the quake measured magnitude 2.7 and occurred around 3:40 p.m. local time (22:40 UTC). Its epicenter was located roughly 7 kilometers west of Castaic, at a depth of 17.1 kilometers.

While small quakes of this size are typically not damaging, they serve as reminders of the region’s active seismic zones. Castaic sits along the northwestern edge of Los Angeles County, near the San Gabriel Mountains and major fault systems monitored by the California Integrated Seismic Network (CISN).

No damage or injuries have been reported as of Monday evening, and the quake was not widely felt beyond the immediate area. The event follows several minor tremors recorded across Southern California in recent weeks, which seismologists say are part of the area’s normal seismic activity.

Residents can report shaking experiences on the USGS “Did You Feel It?” website to assist scientists in mapping community-level intensity.
