California – Palm fronds whip and loose debris skitters across sidewalks as gusty winds surge through parts of Southern California this morning. In Los Angeles, the calm start gives way quickly to blustery conditions that could disrupt travel and daily routines through the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Los Angeles/Oxnard, a Wind Advisory remains in effect from early morning through tonight. Northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph are expected, with gusts reaching up to 40 mph. The advisory covers a wide area, including downtown Los Angeles, the eastern San Fernando Valley, coastal sections, and nearby hills.
These winds can make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles on exposed roadways like U.S. 101 and surface streets near canyon passes. Unsecured outdoor items may blow around, and tree limbs could come down. Recently saturated soils raise the risk of isolated downed trees and brief power outages in some neighborhoods.
Despite the wind, skies stay sunny and temperatures climb into the low 60s today. The contrast may feel deceiving. Blowing dust and debris could reduce visibility at times, particularly near construction zones or open areas. Residents are urged to secure patio furniture, trash bins, and holiday decorations before winds peak.
Conditions ease later tonight as winds gradually diminish. Friday brings quieter weather with sunshine and highs in the low-to-mid 60s. The weekend trends warmer and calmer, with highs climbing into the upper 60s Saturday and low 70s Sunday across much of the metro area.
Early next week continues dry and mild, though meteorologists will keep watching for offshore wind patterns common this time of year. By late January, Los Angeles gains roughly 40 extra minutes of daylight, stretching evenings longer.
Heading out today? Use caution on the roads and let us know how strong the winds feel in your neighborhood.
