Los Angeles, CA – A recent house fire in Los Angeles nearly turned fatal when the occupants removed the batteries from their smoke detectors because they were “making noise.” Fortunately, the family managed to escape without injury, but fire officials say the situation could have easily resulted in tragedy.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the noise was caused by the smoke alarms’ low battery warning, a sound that should prompt residents to replace the batteries, not remove them. Fire safety experts emphasize that working smoke detectors are essential in preventing deaths from home fires, reducing the risk by 50%.
The department urges all residents to test their smoke alarms monthly, simply by pressing the “test” button, and to replace the batteries at least once a year to ensure the alarms are functioning properly.
Jacob Terzoli, a spokesperson for the Fire Department, warned that disabling or removing smoke alarms puts lives in danger, particularly during a fire when every second counts.
