A hazy sunrise over Los Angeles paints the skyline in a golden blur this morning, but behind the glow lies concern for worsening air quality and a stretch of unseasonably warm December weather. Light winds and clear skies are expected to keep smog levels high through midweek, prompting health officials to extend an Air Quality Alert across much of Southern California.

According to the National Weather Service in Oxnard, the region will remain sunny and warm through Thursday, with highs peaking near 82°F across East L.A. and the downtown basin. Winds from the north and northeast stay light, allowing pollutants to linger during the afternoon—especially in valleys and inland corridors. Sensitive groups, including children and older adults, are encouraged to limit time outdoors.

While the heat may feel pleasant, experts warn the dry pattern increases respiratory risks and fire danger in grassy foothills. The week will stay dry and bright, but light patchy fog could return Friday night and early Saturday morning as moisture creeps back into the basin.

Looking ahead, highs remain in the upper 70s to low 80s through Saturday before dipping slightly into the mid-70s next week. Cooler, onshore breezes are expected to arrive by mid-December, bringing mild relief and clearer skies.
