Riverhead, N.Y. – Flooding, pounding surf, and dangerous rip currents are expected to continue across eastern Long Island as coastal hazards intensify through Friday. Water levels could rise up to 2 feet above ground in low-lying neighborhoods, with waves building as high as 16 feet offshore.

According to the National Weather Service, a Coastal Flood Warning takes effect Thursday evening through early Friday, with widespread minor to moderate flooding anticipated in shoreline communities. Vulnerable areas in Orient Point, Montauk, Riverhead, and Shinnecock Bay may see road closures, flooded parking lots, and basements taking on water.

Along the oceanfront, forecasters warn of beach erosion and dune overwash during high tide cycles Thursday night and Friday morning. The north shore of the South Fork and barrier island communities face additional flooding, with 2- to 4-foot waves threatening shoreline roads.

Lifeguards are urging residents and visitors to stay out of the water, as rip currents remain life-threatening even for strong swimmers. Anyone parking near the shoreline should move vehicles to higher ground before Thursday evening’s tide.

Hazards are expected to persist into Friday afternoon, with conditions slowly improving by the weekend. Officials caution that additional advisories may be issued depending on water levels.
