Long Island, NY – Coastal residents are bracing for potentially dangerous flooding today as a strong coastal storm continues to impact Nassau and southwestern Suffolk counties through Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service in New York.
The agency warns of widespread moderate to major coastal flooding along the south shore bays during times of high tide, with minor to moderate flooding expected across the remainder of the coastline. Officials say dune erosion and localized overwashes are likely on Atlantic Ocean beaches.
According to the National Weather Service briefing early Sunday, damaging winds will develop across eastern portions of Long Island from Sunday evening through Monday morning, bringing strong to locally damaging gusts along coastal areas.
Forecasters are also calling for 1 to 3 inches of rain, with the heaviest totals near the coast, leading to minor urban and poor drainage flooding. The system is also expected to produce storm and gale conditions on coastal waters, making marine travel hazardous through early Monday.
Residents in flood-prone zones are urged to monitor tide cycles, move vehicles to higher ground, and avoid driving through flooded roadways. Power outages and travel disruptions are possible into Monday morning’s commute.
This alert remains in effect through Monday, October 13, 2025.
