Long Island, NY – A heat advisory has been issued for much of Long Island this Friday, as forecasters warn of dangerously high temperatures and humidity levels across Nassau and Suffolk counties.
According to the National Weather Service in New York, the advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, with heat index values expected to reach between 100 and 105 degrees. The advisory covers Northeast Suffolk, Northwest Suffolk, Southwest Suffolk, Northern Nassau, and Southern Nassau counties.
The heat advisory means the combination of high temperatures and humidity will make it feel significantly hotter, raising the risk of heat-related illnesses. Seniors, individuals with chronic health conditions, and those without air conditioning are particularly vulnerable, officials said Wednesday.
The National Weather Service urges residents to stay indoors in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. If air conditioning is unavailable at home, people are advised to seek out community cooling centers or visit public locations such as libraries or shopping malls to escape the heat. The advisory also recommends checking on neighbors, family, and friends—especially those who may be at higher risk.
Outdoor workers are encouraged to take frequent breaks in the shade or in air-conditioned environments, as recommended by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Anyone showing symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke should be moved to a cool place immediately, and emergency services should be contacted in the event of heat stroke.
This is the latest in a string of heat advisories for the New York metro area, as July temperatures continue to soar.
