Islip, New York – Long Island faces a 40% chance of moderate winter storm impacts this weekend, with periods of hazardous travel possible between 7 p.m. Friday and 7 p.m. Monday as a coastal storm system moves north along the Eastern Seaboard.

According to the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center, a developing low-pressure system is expected to strengthen off the Southeast coast Saturday before tracking northeastward offshore of the Mid-Atlantic and New England by Sunday. Cold air in place across the Northeast will support the potential for winter precipitation as the system approaches.

Snow probabilities near 40% cover much of Long Island, including Nassau and Suffolk counties, with potential impacts along Interstate 495 (Long Island Expressway), the Northern State Parkway, and the Southern State Parkway. Coastal areas may see rain or a rain-snow mix at times, while interior sections of the island could experience periods of accumulating snow if colder air holds.

Travel impacts are most likely late Saturday into Sunday, when precipitation coverage and wind speeds are forecast to peak. Gusty winds could reduce visibility on open roadways and bridges, increasing the risk of delays and hazardous driving conditions.

Forecasters emphasize that uncertainty remains regarding snowfall totals, precipitation type, and the exact storm track. Even small shifts could significantly change impacts across Long Island, particularly near the coastline.

Residents are urged to monitor official forecasts and prepare for possible travel disruptions. Weekend commuters, service workers, and travelers using major parkways should allow extra time or adjust plans if conditions worsen.
