Peru, IN – On Friday night, a vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian on US 24 near Peru, Indiana. Troopers from the Indiana State Police Peru District and deputies from the Miami County Sheriff’s Office responded to the tragic incident around 9 p.m.
According to Master Trooper Todd Trottier’s preliminary investigation, a 2008 Chevrolet Uplander, driven by Stephanie Dewitt of Peru, was traveling westbound when it struck Jeffrey Moss, 66, of Logansport. Moss was attempting to cross US 24 from the south side to the north side when the accident occurred.
Moss was pronounced dead at the scene by the Miami County Coroner’s Office. Authorities have notified his family. While the crash happened in darkness, initial findings indicate alcohol or drugs likely did not contribute to the incident. However, investigators are awaiting toxicology results to confirm.
The Indiana State Police continue to investigate the crash, with assistance from local emergency responders, including the Roann Fire Department, Duke’s EMS, and the Miami County Coroner’s Office. Troopers urge caution on rural roads, especially after dark, to prevent similar tragedies.
