LOGAN, Utah – Early-season snow is coating the northern Utah mountains this morning, making for slick, hazardous travel through the higher elevations of the Wasatch and Uinta ranges. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon MDT Monday for areas north of I-80, including Logan Summit, Mantua, and Mirror Lake Highway.
According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, total snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are expected north and east of I-84, with up to 12 inches possible in the Bear River Range. Lighter totals of 1 to 4 inches are likely closer to the Wasatch Front near I-15, while the Western Uinta Mountains will see 4 to 8 inches above 8,500 feet.
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) warns that US-89 through Logan Canyon and State Route 39 east of Ogden could become snow-covered and icy early today. Drivers should reduce speed, allow extra braking distance, and carry winter travel gear when crossing mountain routes.
Snow will taper late this morning as drier air moves in from the west. Skies will clear this afternoon, but chilly temperatures will persist through the evening. A brief warmup is expected midweek before another storm system approaches northern Utah later in the week.
