CROWN POINT, IN — Authorities have recovered more than 40 dogs from two properties suspected to be part of a puppy mill operation, following an anonymous tip received by the Lake County Sheriff’s Department.
Tragically, four dogs were found dead at the scene. A 41-year-old man is currently under investigation in connection with this case.
According to Lake County Sheriff’s Police, it began Wednesday when detectives from Lake County were alerted to a man purchasing an unusually large quantity of dog food and veterinary supplies used for animals. Acting swiftly, authorities executed search warrants on Thursday at a residence in Crown Point and a nearby barn in Rensselaer.
Officers were met with a distressing sight as they found dozens of dogs in varying conditions at the two locations. Among the rescued animals were a magnificent mountain dog, seven American Bulldogs, and twenty-nine French Bulldogs.
The well-being of the surviving dogs is being evaluated by veterinary experts, with the Lake County Animal Adoption & Control overseeing their care. Due to this operation, the shelter will be closed to the public today and tomorrow.
Individuals interested in viewing and adopting pets will be accommodated by appointment only. The shelter staff is dedicated to ensuring these dogs find loving homes where they can experience the care and compassion they deserve.
“As a person who loves pets, I am appalled at the treatment of these animals,” Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez said Thursday afternoon. “We’re investigating allegations the person running this operation may have been illegally performing surgery on some of the animals, as well. I’m pleased that our detectives were so diligent with following up on leads in this case.”
The investigation into this alleged puppy mill is still ongoing.
