A 27-year-old Verona woman, Alexi Garbi, has pleaded not guilty to the charge of Aggravated Use of an Electronic Communication Device/ Death, a class four felony. Her case will be determined by a bench trial in front of Grundy County Judge Scott Belt on May 10th.

Garbi was involved in a two-vehicle accident on June 2nd, 2020, at the intersection of West Grand Ridge Road and South Verona Road. Sheriff Ken Briley reported that Ellen Hack, 65, was extricated from her vehicle, which was on fire at the time of the incident. Hack passed away on June 19th, 2020, due to her injuries.

Investigators allege Garbi was conducting a Facetime call on her electronic communication device while operating a vehicle, leading to the crash that killed Hack. Garbi remains free on a $20,000 bond.
