GIBSON CITY, Ill. — Flames and smoke were once again visible in a building adjacent to the apartment building where a fire started and spread to two others late Thursday.

Earlier in the day, fire crews had battled the blaze for more than eight hours before putting it out, but it reignited sometime around 7 p.m. The fire department had left equipment on the scene to be ready in case there was a flare-up.

It was later confirmed late Thursday several pets died in the fire.

Chief Bruce Kallal confirmed that the original blaze started in an apartment building and quickly spread to two other nearby buildings.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
