Chicago, IL – Residents in communities south of Interstate 80 are advised to stay vigilant as forecasters predict heavy thunderstorms today, which could pose minor flood threats despite the Kankakee River currently being well below flood stages, measuring at 3.5 feet. The National Weather Service in Chicago has highlighted areas including Odell, Dwight, and Essex as susceptible to localized flooding due to the expected rainfall of up to two inches.

While the Kankakee River remains below the action stage of 4.5 feet, continuous rain could cause unexpected rises in water levels. Local authorities are monitoring the situation closely, particularly near communities like Chatsworth, Danforth, and Hopkins Park. Today’s cooler temperatures, influenced by onshore flow from Lake Michigan, will temporarily alleviate the warmth but not the risk of rain.

As the week progresses, temperatures are set to rise again, potentially aiding in drying out the saturated soils. Nonetheless, residents are encouraged to prepare for all scenarios by staying updated with the latest weather forecasts and ensuring they have appropriate measures in place should the weather conditions worsen.
