SPENCER, IN – In the wake of the devastating storms that claimed two lives in April, the Owen County State Park Campground, located near Spencer, Indiana, will be closed indefinitely.
Officials from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources have stated that a comprehensive evaluation, repair, and reconstruction of all campground facilities is necessary before reopening to the public. The closure follows the tragic incident in April where the bodies of Brett Kincaid, 53, and Wendy Kincaid, 47, both residents of Rossville, Indiana, were discovered in the McCormick’s Creek State Park campground following storms that moved through the area, including suspected tornadoes.
The campground in Owen County was among the hardest-hit areas, with significant damage and destruction. Many campers at the time sought refuge in a nearby cement block bathhouse, while only one person was first reported with minor injuries before the bodies of the couple were discovered.
The aftermath of the storms revealed the campground area to be severely impacted, with vast sections reduced to flattened landscapes. Indiana residents and avid campers who frequented the Owen County State Park Campground must now seek alternative recreational options.
