CHICAGO, IL – The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has raised concerns over the air quality in Illinois, issuing an alert for Friday, June 2.

As dry and sunny weather persists and drought conditions worsen, ground-level ozone levels are expected to rise.

The national Air Quality Index indicates that air quality will fall into the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category.   That includes people with lung disease such as asthma, older adults, children and teenagers, and people who are active outdoors.

Illinois Environmental Protection Agency Director  John J. Kim urges caution, especially for individuals with respiratory or pulmonary disorders, active children, and adults.  All residents are advised to keep cool and limit physical activity when air quality is low.

To mitigate pollution, residents are encouraged to use public transport, consolidate errands, reduce energy consumption, and avoid gasoline-powered equipment during elevated air quality periods.
