Livingston County, NY – An 89-year-old woman was killed after two dump trucks collided and slammed into a home that caught fire in the Town of Sparta on Friday morning.

According to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred September 11, 2025, around 7:42 a.m. near Culbertson Road and Harter Road. Deputies and Dansville Police arrived to find the trucks had struck a residence that was fully engulfed in flames.

Fire crews from multiple departments worked to contain the blaze as emergency medical teams treated both truck drivers, who were later transported to Strong Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A female resident was initially unaccounted for.

Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty confirmed the victim was later found inside the destroyed home. She was identified as Isabell F. Erwin, 89, of that residence.

Investigators believe a mechanical failure caused one of the trucks to lose its brakes while descending Harter Road. The vehicle struck a second truck, sending both into the home at 9128 Culbertson Road. Each was carrying approximately 20 tons of asphalt at the time.

The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office with assistance from state and local agencies, including the New York State Police, Dansville Police, and multiple fire departments across Livingston County.
