Little Rock, Ark. – A sweltering Sunday across Arkansas is expected to bring more than just heat — afternoon and evening storms could dump another round of rain on already soaked parts of the state, especially in the northeast.
According to the National Weather Service in Little Rock, heat index values will soar between 95°F and 105°F, with highs in the low to mid-90s across central and southern counties. Rain chances ramp up by late afternoon, peaking near 60% in areas like Jonesboro, Mountain Home, and Pocahontas, where 3 to 6 inches of rain have already fallen since Friday.
Cities such as Little Rock, Fort Smith, and Pine Bluff could see isolated thunderstorms between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m., with potential for brief gusty winds, small hail, and localized flash flooding. Northwest and southern Arkansas, including Texarkana and De Queen, are expected to remain mostly dry.
If you’re outdoors, be ready to head inside at the first sign of thunder. Lightning risk will increase into the evening hours. Stay hydrated, and avoid prolonged exposure during peak heat midday.
Rain and thunderstorm chances continue into early next week, especially in the afternoons. Alerts remain in effect for elevated heat and flooding through Sunday night.
