Arkansas – Wet streets reflect early headlights this morning as clouds hang low over central Arkansas. The air feels calm for now, but change is already in motion. Meteorologists are tracking a high-impact winter system that could quickly turn familiar routes treacherous by Friday.

Today starts unsettled, with showers tapering later and temperatures climbing into the 50s. Conditions briefly improve Thursday, offering a final window to prepare. By Thursday night, colder air slides in, and the stage is set for winter weather to take over.

A Winter Storm Watch is now in effect from Friday afternoon through late Saturday night for Little Rock and much of the state. Forecast guidance points to a complex and dangerous mix. Rain may begin Friday, then transition to snow and sleet by evening. Freezing rain is also possible, especially across southern and eastern Arkansas.

Snow totals of 4 to 8 inches are expected across central and northern areas, with isolated higher amounts possible. Ice accumulations could reach a quarter inch or more, enough to bring down tree limbs and power lines. Travel may become nearly impossible at times, especially Friday evening as temperatures drop and precipitation intensifies.

Saturday looks particularly disruptive. Heavy snow may fall at times, driven by gusty northeast winds. Roads that briefly improve during daylight could refreeze quickly after dark, increasing the risk of flash freezing. Avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for possible power outages.

By Sunday, snow chances diminish, but cold air lingers. Slick spots may persist into the morning as temperatures remain well below freezing. Looking ahead, the 6–10 day outlook keeps Arkansas colder than normal, with additional precipitation chances next week across the central U.S.
