Little Rock, Arkansas – Extreme cold conditions are gripping much of Arkansas this morning as Cold Weather Advisories and Extreme Cold Warnings remain in effect through midday, bringing dangerously low wind chills and bitter temperatures statewide.

According to the National Weather Service in Little Rock, wind chill values have fallen below zero across most of the state, with readings approaching 10 degrees below zero at times in higher elevations of the Ozarks. Single-digit wind chills are also common across central and southern Arkansas, including the Little Rock metropolitan area.

Morning low temperatures ranged from the single digits in northern and western counties to the teens farther south. Despite some sunshine later today, forecast highs this afternoon are expected to remain below freezing for most areas, generally ranging from the mid-20s to lower 30s. Portions of southern Arkansas may briefly reach the lower 30s, but conditions will remain well below normal for late January.

The cold weather headlines are in effect from midnight through noon Saturday and cover much of Arkansas, including areas along Interstate 40, Interstate 30, Interstate 49, and Interstate 55. Officials warn that frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes when wind chills drop below zero.

Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers, and cover exposed skin when outside. The National Weather Service also emphasizes protecting the “four Ps” — people, pets, plants, and pipes. Pets should be brought indoors, and exposed pipes should be wrapped or allowed to drip to prevent freezing.

Travelers and early-morning commuters along major roadways, including I-40 near Little Rock, I-49 in northwest Arkansas, and I-30 in southwest Arkansas, should be prepared for bitter cold conditions if stranded or delayed.

Cold conditions will continue tonight into Sunday morning, with lows again falling into the single digits and teens. Officials stress that cold-weather precautions remain critical until temperatures begin to moderate later in the weekend.
