Ann Arbor, MI – A lithium-ion battery from a lawn mower is being blamed for a garage fire early Monday morning.

Firefighters responded at 2:53 a.m. to the 1500 block of Hillridge Boulevard for reports of a house fire. According to the Ann Arbor Fire Department, the blaze originated in the garage and involved the exterior wall. Crews quickly extinguished the flames before they could spread into the main house. No injuries were reported.

Officials identified the cause as a lithium-ion battery pack from a lawn mower that entered thermal runaway. This failure can result in toxic smoke, flames, and even explosions.

The fire department urged residents to watch for signs of battery failure, including swelling, discoloration, or unusual odors. If a battery begins overheating, unplug it and move it to a safe outdoor area, far from combustible materials, for at least 24 hours.

Fire officials also recommend never handling damaged batteries with bare hands. Use tools to move them to avoid burns or chemical exposure.

Authorities stress the importance of proper storage and handling of lithium-ion batteries to prevent similar incidents.
