Hastings, Neb. – Strong winds and storms could rattle much of Nebraska late Friday night as a cold front sweeps across the state, with wind gusts topping 60 mph and the chance for quarter-size hail.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, the greatest risk comes between 8 p.m. Friday and 4 a.m. Saturday. The agency says damaging winds will be the primary threat, though hail is also possible in spots. The marginal severe weather risk covers areas from McCook through Grand Island and into Lincoln.

Drivers traveling along Interstate 80 late Friday should use caution, as gusty crosswinds could make travel hazardous, especially for high-profile vehicles. Power outages are also possible if winds down trees or power lines.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items ahead of storms and keep cell phones charged in case of overnight outages. NWS officials advise staying weather-aware through the night, as additional advisories could be issued if storm intensity increases.

Storm chances will diminish by daybreak Saturday, but more unsettled weather may develop over the weekend.
