Lincoln, IL – Unseasonably warm conditions across central Illinois will give way to storms and a sharp return to winter following the passage of a strong cold front Sunday afternoon and evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Central Illinois, temperatures will remain well above normal through Sunday, with highs reaching the 50s and lower 60s across much of the region. Cloud cover will increase Sunday as a cold front approaches from the west.
Rain showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening, with forecasters noting that some storms could produce isolated strong to damaging wind gusts. While widespread severe weather is not anticipated, brief heavy rain and gusty winds may impact outdoor activities and travel.
Behind the cold front, windy conditions and rapidly falling temperatures are expected Sunday night. The National Weather Service warns that the sharp temperature drop will mark an abrupt return to winter-like conditions for the upcoming week.
Forecast highs on Monday are expected to fall into the lower to middle 20s, with wind chills making it feel colder at times. Additional cold mornings are expected through midweek, with overnight lows dipping into the teens and 20s. Some light snow or flurries are possible early next week, though no significant accumulation is currently forecast.
The combination of rain followed by freezing temperatures could lead to slick spots on roads, particularly if standing water freezes overnight. Motorists should remain alert for changing road conditions late Sunday night and Monday morning.
Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items ahead of gusty winds Sunday and to prepare for colder conditions returning next week. Forecast details may continue to evolve, and additional updates will be issued as the cold front approaches.
