Illinois — Cold air tightens its grip across central Illinois as blustery winds and snow flurries usher in a stretch of wintry weather that could impact travel in and around Lincoln. Temperatures hover in the upper 20s to near 30 today before sliding downward by evening, setting the stage for accumulating snow and icy conditions.
Snow flurries linger through the morning hours, then skies briefly quiet before another disturbance approaches tonight. Snow becomes likely Thursday night, with the National Weather Service indicating a dusting to over one inch is possible across much of central and southeast Illinois. Areas north of Interstate 70, including Lincoln, carry a 30 to 50 percent chance of exceeding one inch by early Friday.
While snowfall amounts appear modest, impacts could be outsized. Light accumulations falling onto cold pavement may quickly create slick and icy roadways, especially during the Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes. Reduced visibility is possible at times as snow develops overnight.
Temperatures continue trending colder. Overnight lows dip into the mid-teens, while wind chills fall into the single digits and near zero at times. By Friday night and into the weekend, colder air intensifies, with below-zero wind chills likely and daytime highs struggling to climb out of the teens and lower 20s.
Another chance for light snow returns Friday night, keeping winter hazards in place as colder air settles across the region. Untreated roads, sidewalks, and parking lots may remain icy through the weekend due to persistent cold.
Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time. Pedestrians should watch for icy steps and sidewalks as temperatures drop quickly after sunset.
Winter is clearly reasserting itself across central Illinois. Conditions may change rapidly tonight, and even light snow could lead to hazardous travel.
