Lincoln, IL – Gusty winds and a quick burst of wintry weather are moving through Central Illinois today as a strong cold front pushes across the region, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Lincoln.
Forecasters report wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph throughout the day, with rain changing to snow showers by late afternoon. While only a light dusting of snow is expected, the sudden temperature drop and gusty winds may cause slick road conditions and brief periods of low visibility—especially during the evening commute.
Highs will range from 32°F to 43°F before falling sharply into the teens overnight, accompanied by wind chills near zero in some areas. The NWS warns that motorists should use extra caution on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses, as wet surfaces could quickly freeze.
A secondary system is expected to bring another round of snow Thursday night into Friday, with the potential for minor accumulations across Central Illinois. By the weekend, frigid air will settle in, with highs in the teens and overnight lows dipping below zero, creating wind chills between –5°F and –10°F.
Drivers and residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items, prepare for reduced visibility, and limit travel during the strongest wind gusts. The NWS also recommends checking updated forecasts before heading out, especially Thursday evening and Friday morning.
