Libby, MT – The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of Undersheriff John Hyslop, who passed away early January 8, 2026, at his home in Libby. He was 57.

According to a release from the Sheriff’s Office, Undersheriff Hyslop began his law enforcement career on May 22, 2013, when he joined the department as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff. He was promoted to full-time Deputy Sheriff that September and later appointed as Undersheriff in November 2024.

Throughout his career, Hyslop was recognized for his technical expertise in information technology and electronic equipment. He also served as an Evidence Technician and Field Training Officer, mentoring new deputies across Lincoln County.

His most celebrated work came as a K9 handler alongside his narcotics partner, Bear. Together, the duo became widely recognized throughout the Northwest for their proficiency in detecting illegal narcotics.

The Sheriff’s Office is asking the public to keep Hyslop’s wife, Karen, his mother Judy, and the entire family in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. A GoFundMe has been established to support the family, with donations directed to the John and Karen Hyslop Support Fund.

Funeral arrangements and additional details will be shared once available.
