CHANHASSEN, Minn. (Dec. 10, 2025) — Another round of light snow will move across southern and southwestern Minnesota on Thursday, bringing minor accumulations before a blast of Arctic air plunges temperatures well below zero this weekend, according to the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities.

Forecasters expect most areas to see around an inch of snow or less Thursday into early Friday, with slightly higher totals — 1 to 2 inches — possible in parts of southwestern Minnesota, including areas near Marshall, Redwood Falls, and Fairmont. Light snow is likely to begin during the morning hours and taper off by early Friday.

While snowfall amounts are not expected to cause widespread impacts, forecasters caution that slick roads and reduced visibility may accompany bursts of snow during the Thursday morning and evening commutes.

Behind the snow, a surge of Arctic air will send temperatures plummeting through the weekend. The coldest air is expected Friday through Sunday, when highs may struggle to rise above zero across much of western and northern Minnesota. Wind chills could range from –20°F to –35°F, with the most dangerous cold anticipated early Saturday and Sunday mornings.

“People should prepare for bitterly cold conditions and limit time outdoors this weekend,” meteorologists said in Wednesday’s update. “Even brief exposure can lead to frostbite.”

Temperatures will moderate slightly by early next week, but lows are still expected to remain in the single digits across most of the region.
