LIBERTY LAKE, WA — A Liberty Lake man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after police responded to reports of gunfire near N. Aladdin Road and E. Mission Avenue, according to a press release from the Liberty Lake Police Department.

Officers arrived at the scene around 12:48 p.m. on November 25, 2025, and—with assistance from Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies—established a perimeter around the residence. Law enforcement personnel began issuing commands for the suspect, identified as Mahlon Cooley, to exit his home.

After a brief standoff, Cooley came out holding a pistol. Officers ordered him to put down the firearm, which he did before being detained without further incident.

Investigators say Cooley is a convicted felon prohibited from possessing firearms. Officers recovered a black semi-automatic pistol and a spent shell casing outside the residence. A search warrant was executed at Cooley’s home, though no additional weapons were found.

Cooley was booked into the Spokane County Jail on the following charges:

  • Unlawful Possession of a Firearm (RCW 9.41.040)
  • Aiming or Discharging Firearms/Dangerous Weapons (RCW 9.41.230)
  • Reckless Endangerment (RCW 9A.36.050)
