Lewisburg, West Virginia — A potent winter disturbance will bring accumulating mountain snow across southeast West Virginia on New Year’s Eve, continuing into New Year’s Day, with hazardous travel expected in higher elevations.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect for western Greenbrier County, where 4 to 8 inches of snow are expected from Wednesday evening through Thursday morning. A Winter Weather Advisory covers Mercer County, Summers County, and eastern Greenbrier County, with 1 to 3 inches of snow possible.

Snow is forecast to begin this evening, increasing in intensity overnight before tapering off Thursday morning. Gusty winds may contribute to blowing snow at higher elevations, further reducing visibility.

Roadways expected to be impacted include I-64 over the Greenbrier Valley, US-219, US-60, WV-92, and WV-20, particularly near Lewisburg, White Sulphur Springs, Rainelle, and Flat Top Mountain. Slick and snow-covered conditions are likely on untreated mountain roads, bridges, and secondary routes.

Elsewhere in the mountains, snowfall totals are expected to remain under 1 inch, but falling temperatures overnight could still lead to icy spots. Travel conditions may deteriorate quickly late tonight, especially during overnight New Year’s Eve travel.

The National Weather Service urges motorists to avoid unnecessary mountain travel overnight, slow down on snow-covered roads, and monitor updates as conditions evolve into New Year’s Day.
