Helena, MT – A late-night Montana Highway Patrol pursuit in Lewis and Clark County ended in tragedy Saturday after a fleeing driver crashed into a home, killing one person and injuring another.

According to the Montana Highway Patrol, the incident began just after 11 p.m. Saturday when troopers initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle suspected of DUI. The vehicle initially stopped, and a passenger exited before the driver allegedly fled southbound on Lake Helena Drive, prompting a brief pursuit.

Troopers reported that shortly after the chase began, the suspect vehicle failed to navigate the intersection of Lake Helena Drive and East Old Highway 12. The vehicle then left the roadway and crashed into a residence, killing an occupant inside the home and injuring another individual.

The driver, who was also injured in the crash, was apprehended at the scene and transported to the hospital. According to the Highway Patrol, the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office is assisting with the ongoing investigation. Once complete, the case will be turned over to the Lewis and Clark County Attorney’s Office for charging decisions.

MHP noted that deciding whether to pursue a vehicle is among the most critical and time-sensitive decisions troopers face, emphasizing that public safety remains their top priority during fast-evolving situations.

Authorities said their thoughts are with the victim’s family following what they described as a “tragic loss.”
