McRoberts, Ky. – A 70-year-old man died after a house fire Saturday morning on KY Highway 343 in Letcher County, prompting a state police investigation.

According to Kentucky State Police Post 13 in Hazard, troopers received a report of a structure fire in the McRoberts community at approximately 7:41 a.m. Saturday, February 21.

Troopers and local first responders arrived to find the residence fully engulfed in flames. After firefighters extinguished the blaze, emergency personnel searched the home for the homeowner, identified as Robert Mullins, 70, of McRoberts.

During the search, responders located the remains of one individual inside the structure. Authorities said the remains are believed to be those of Mullins. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Letcher County Coroner’s Office.

Kentucky State Police said no foul play is suspected at this time. The remains were transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort for an autopsy.

The investigation remains ongoing and is being led by Detective Scott Caudill, with assistance from the Kentucky State Fire Marshal’s Office.
